Kochi faces the Pacific Ocean, with a coastline stretching west to east and strong sunlight, providing ideal conditions for salt production. The towns of Kuroshio in the west and Tano in the east of Kochi are two of the few places in Japan that produce sun-dried salt. The salt has a mellow taste with a slight sweetness. Deep sea water off Cape Muroto is also used to produce a pure salt with a mild taste.
